Understanding 5.10.2: Accessible content creation
A presentation at Understanding 5.10.2: Accessible content creation by Hidde de Vries
5.10.2: Accessible content creation Hidde de Vries, Logius (Government of the Netherlands)
5.10.2: Accessible content creation Where ICT is, or includes, authoring tool functionality, the authoring tool shall enable and guide the production of content that conforms to clauses 9 (web), or clause 10 (Nonweb documents), or clause 11 (Non-web software) as applicable. NOTE: Authoring tools may rely on additional tools where conformance with specific requirements is not achievable by a single tool. For example, a video editing tool may enable the creation of video files for distribution via broadcast television and the web, but authoring of subtitle files for multiple formats may be provided by a different tool.
In brief This is about authoring tools enabling and guiding accessibility of content where it is made. Not: accessible content, accessible tools.
“Enable”: that I can create a list
“Guide”: that I get some guidance around list creation
Examples of authoring tools CMSes LMSes Collaborative office software (like Google Docs) Streaming platforms Image editors (Photoshop, etc.) Presentation software Audio production (Cubase, FL Studio, Logic) + associated music software (virtual instruments) Video editing software
Examples of content Social media post Course Blog post Presentation Maths test Docs pages Comment section on review website Real-time media (video stream, podcast, live show, etc.) Web page PDF document SVG Complex images like infographics E-book Product listings
Examples of enabling accessibility User can add alternatives for images User can create numbered lists User can upload captions for videos User can create headings User can upload audio description for a video User can create blockquotes User can add headers to tables User can create bulleted lists User can upload transcript for audio User can define language of parts
Examples of guiding accessibility Explanation of how to add alternative text Flag where language differs but is not indicated Flag bold or bigger text as could be heading level Flag empty heading cells in tables Colours get flagged if low contrast Guided workflows Example: video publishing workflow with explicit steps for captions / AD
Why is it important? • A lot of inaccessibility happens during production of content. • Finding inaccessibility earlier is cheaper. • If the tool can’t do what’s needed, it’s blocking accessibility.
Why is it important? • Requirement is on those who make authoring tools. • It benefits consumers of products and services, as well as content producers.
Scenarios Social media app where users can add an image to their post Platform allows user to broadcast a video podcast live
How to test? (Enablement) 1. Define type of content that can be created using this tool. 2. For each, list what sort of accessibility is to be expected for that type of content 3. Verify if that accessibility information can be added using the authoring tool. Pass: Feature to add accessibility information is there and works Fail (examples): the user can create a table, but there is no way to add headings the user can create a list but there is no way to mark it as a list the user can add images, but there is no way to add alternative tex the user can add video, but there is no way to add captions
How to test? (Guidance) 1. Define type of content being created 2. List what sort of accessibility is to be expected for that type of content 3. Find out if there are any notes or guidance around how to create that content in an accessible manner. Pass: Feature to add accessibility information is there and works Fail: There is no guidance
