Digital transformation has an elephant in the room: the energy use of digital services can be enormous. In 2024, the World Bank estimated the internet to account for 1-4% of global greenhouse emissions, similar to aviation. The good news is: there are opportunities to improve. From user centered design to web development and infrastructure: they all impact how government digital services use energy. In this talk, we’ll look at best practices from the W3C’s new Web Sustainability Guidelines.
